The Shaft Relative Vibration Monitor is designed for the highest reliability to safeguard a plant’s most critical rotating machinery. As a 1-slot monitor, it is used in conjunction with other AMS 6500 monitors to form a comprehensive API 670 machinery protection monitoring system. Its applications span across steam, gas, compressor, and hydro turbo machinery sectors.

The primary function of this monitoring module is to accurately monitor shaft relative vibration and to reliably protect machinery by comparing vibration parameters against predefined alarm setpoints, triggering alarms, and activating relays. The monitoring process involves a displacement sensor, which can be mounted either through the bearing case or internally on the bearing housing, targeting the rotating shaft.

This displacement sensor operates as a non-contact device, measuring the shaft’s position and movement. Since it is mounted on the bearing, the monitored parameter is known as shaft relative vibration, which refers to the shaft vibration in relation to the bearing case.

Shaft relative vibration is a crucial measurement for predictive and protective monitoring on all sleeve bearing machines. It is the preferred choice when the machine case is significantly more massive than the rotor, and the bearing case is not expected to vibrate between zero and the machine’s production-state speeds. In contrast, shaft absolute vibration measurement might be selected when the bearing case and rotor masses are more closely matched, and there is a higher likelihood of the bearing case vibrating, which could affect shaft relative readings.
