The 3300 XL 25 mm Transducer System is a comprehensive solution designed for measuring differential expansion (DE) in mid-size to large steam turbine generators. It comprises a separate 25 mm probe, an extension cable, and a 3300 XL 25 mm Proximitor Sensor. With a linear range of 12.7 mm (500 mils) provided by its 0.787 V/mm (20 mV/mil) output, this system is particularly suited for quantifying the growth discrepancies between the turbine rotor and the machine stator (casing).
Differential Expansion measurement is facilitated by two proximity transducers that observe a collar or ramp at a distance from the thrust bearing. There are several typical transducer mounting arrangements: two transducers observing the same side of a collar, two complementary input transducers observing opposite sides of a collar to effectively double the measurable DE range, and two transducers with at least one viewing a ramp on the rotor while the other views a separate ramp or a different rotor location to compensate for radial movement, which introduces some error but allows for a longer total DE distance measurement than the complementary method.
The choice of mounting method depends on factors such as the size of the available target, the expected rotor axial movement, and the type of DE target within the machine, whether it’s a collar or a ramp. When sufficient collar height is present, the preferred configuration involves two transducers observing the same side of a collar, as this setup provides redundant measurements for increased reliability.
System Compatibility
The 3300 XL 25 mm probe is available in a wide range of case configurations to physically replace all standard 7200 25 mm, 7200 35 mm, and 25 mm DE Integral transducer systems, including side and rear exit probes, and the Proximitor Sensor features an output identical to that of the 7200 and 25 mm DE Integral systems, which allows customers to upgrade their monitoring equipment without the need for any changes in the monitor configuration; however, when upgrading from previous systems, it is necessary to replace every component of the transducer system, including the probe, extension cable, and Proximitor Sensor, with the corresponding 3300 XL 25 mm components.
